A clean city is everyone´s concern

The Lake Vesijärvi project is an icon of local work for the environment. The lake, once carelessly spoiled by industrialisation, has now been made better thanks to 20 years of hard work. Lake Vesijärvi unites Lahti residents, researchers, decision-makers and companies in a mission to take care of the lake.

The households of Lahti have had separate containers for waste-to-energy sorting since 1998. The percentage of waste utilised in the Lahti region is as high as 90%. There is no similar waste-to-energy sorting system in use anywhere else in Finland. The production of electricity and heat by waste-to-energy incineration saves natural fuels. The Lahti Energy’s new incineration plant is a significant investment for the future.
